Deputy Chief of Police, Ed Preston

Preston is from Bradenton, Florida, and entered the United States Marine Corps where he served as a Squadron Legal Officer at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point.   He is a veteran of the Persian Gulf War, left the Marine Corps in December 1992, and began his career with the New Bern Police Department.

He attended Craven Community College, Liberty University and received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Mount Olive College.   Preston is now completing his Juris Doctorate from Concord Law School.

Deputy Chief Preston has worked as a Patrol Officer, Field Training Officer, Major Case Detective, Narcotics Investigator and had been Supervisor of the Narcotics Unit since January 1999.  During his leadership of the Narcotics Unit, one of his investigators was recognized as the North Carolina Narcotics Enforcement Officer of the Year, and the Department was recognized by the United States Attorney's office for outstanding investigative performance. The Narcotics Unit also successfully concluded three separate Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force Investigations.

He was promoted to the Rank of Captain in May of 2004 and again promoted to Deputy Chief in January 2007.
