Lt. John West , Professional Standards Commander

& Information Technology

Lieutenant West began his career with the New Bern Police Department in October 1984 as a Patrol Officer. His other duty assignments have included Department Training Officer, Communications Officer, Criminal Investigator and Crime Analyst.

Lieutenant West was instrumental in the computerization of the department and the continued success of the Police Information Technology Unit.

Lieutenant West was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in June 1999 and subsequently assigned as the Support Services Section Commander, where he was responsible for Records, Property Management, Front Desk PST's and Police Information Technology. He was later named the Communications Commander, and in 2009 became responsible for the Office of Professional Standards.

Police Information Technology

Lt. West is also responsible for overseeing the PIT unit, which consists of a civilian Network Administrator and civilian Computer System Technician. They are responsible for all computer operations within the department, with primary duties being:

Purchasing hardware systems, software components, and computer supplies
Providing technical maintenance and support
Monitoring the network system
Providing backup for the system
Installing computers and components
